Daniel 9:27 – The Latter Rain Outpouring on the Last Day Church
And he will confirm the covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”
I want to review a few main points about this verse because it’s important for us to understand for the days ahead.
Here is the interpretation of Daniel 9:27 accepted by most of the church:
At the beginning of the seven year period, Israel makes a peace treaty with the anti-Christ. The anti-Christ breaks the peace treaty with Israel in the middle of the week and puts an end to sacrifice and offering at the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. The anti-Christ then sets himself up in the temple and becomes the abomination of desolation.
Now I will show you how this translation can’t possibly be accurate.
Point 1 The make or create word is not in the Hebrew. The word in the Hebrew means to strengthen or enhance. No one is making anything. This is an existing covenant. This is a strengthening of an existing covenant.
Point 2 The many is not Israel. In the last four prophetic chapters of Daniel, Israel is referred to several times. Always as ‘your people’. Here are the references:
Daniel 9:15 Your people out of the land of Egypt
Daniel 9:16 Jerusalem and Your people have become
Daniel 9:19 Your people are called by Your name
Daniel 9:24 — “Seventy weeks are determined for your people”
Daniel 10:14 — “What will happen to your people in the latter days”
Daniel 11:14 your people will also lift themselves up
Daniel 12:1 — “Your people shall be delivered”
If this was talking about Israel, it would say ‘your people’.
Israel is the least of all nations in the past and especially today.
The LORD did not choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.” Deut 7:7
Today, there are a few million Jews in Israel on a planet with almost 9 billion people. They are within the statistical margin of error when comparing them to the population of China or India.
There is not a hermeneutic on the planet to justify that ‘the many’ is Israel. If it was Israel, it would say ‘your people’ or ‘the few’, not ‘the many’.
Point 3 In the middle of the week, He puts a stop to sacrifice and offering. He does NOT put a stop to temple worship. Notice that it specifically says, sacrifice and offering.
Sacrifice and offering takes place in the outer court. Worship takes place in the temple. The temple represents intimacy with God. His presence is in the temple. Worship in the temple is NOT stopped! It continues.
Sacrifice and offering You did not desire. Ps 40:6. God desires intimacy, not empty religious performance. He puts a stop to the outer court activity in the middle of the week.
Point 4 The ’he’ that strengthens the covenant is NOT the same ‘he’ that comes and makes desolate.
There are two people in this verse. One that strengthens the covenant at the beginning of the week, and one who comes and makes desolate at the halfway point of the week.
Summary
Daniel 9:27 is an overview of the last seven years before the return of Messiah.
The ‘he’ that strengthens the covenant is Jesus. He is strengthening an existing covenant. This is the new covenant in the blood of Jesus.
The ‘many’ is the church. At the end of the age, there is a strengthening of the new covenant with the church. This is to prepare the church for the final seven years. This is the fulfillment of the latter rain outpouring spoken by Joel and James. The church was planted with the early rain at Pentecost. The church, or the harvest, is brought to maturity by the latter rain during the last seven years.
Jeus puts a stop to sacrifice and offering in the middle of the seven years. Sacrifice and offering take place in the outer court. Never in the temple. The temple worship continues.
This is pictured perfectly in Rev 11. Measure the temple and those who worship therein. Leave out the outer court. It is trodden under foot by the gentiles for three and a half years.
In the last day church, there are those who are worshiping in the temple and there are those who are in the outer court. Those in the outer court have failed to enter in, to go beyond the veil, as it says in Hebrews. They are trampled underfoot. This is a quote from Jesus in Matt 5:13. Salt that has lost its flavor is trodden under foot.
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
This is talking about Christians who have salvation, but who do not have intimacy with Messiah.
In my terminology, they have justification but little or no sanctification. Justification is the easy part. Jesus did all the work. Dying on the cross to give us the free gift of salvation. Sanctification, on the other hand, requires the believer to pick up his cross and follow Him. Death to self. This is the hard part.
Jesus puts a stop to what those in the outer court are doing at the midpoint of the week. This is for their own good. I discipline and reprove those whom I love. This is Jesus bringing back the apostate church of the last days.
All this takes place at the midpoint of the seven years. This is when Satan is kicked out of heaven and thrown to the earth, filled with rage, because he only has a short time left. This is the ‘one who comes and makes desolate’ in last part of Daniel 9:27.
Conclusion
Daniel 9:27 is prophesying the latter rain outpouring upon the church in order to bring the harvest to maturity. Jesus disciplines the apostate last day church, those who have lost their saltiness, in order to bring them back to Him. How does one become salty again? Persecution! Those have not lost their saltiness are in the temple and are worshiping. They are not trodden under foot. More on them in another video.
Why is this important? Many will miss the latter rain outpouring. Some, in the church, will even oppose it. We must position ourselves to receive the latter rain. Second, we must understand that if we are not ‘salty’, we will be disciplined during the tribulation. This is the purpose of the tribulation.
May we all merit to be ‘salty’. Amen.
