NATO allies on opposite sides in Manbij
Turkey and U.S. to cooperate in Syria
By Craig C. White
(Reuters) – Turkey will take steps together with the United States in Syria’s Manbij region, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Friday, following his meeting with new U.S. Secretary State Mike Pompeo in Brussels.
Manbij is located in northern Syria. Manbij is one of the last Kurdish strongholds west of the Euphrates River. The U.S. is supporting the Kurds in Manbij. The U.S. backed Kurds are fighting ISIS. Turkish President Erdogan plans to attack Manbij and Tell Rifaat next. Turkish President Erdogan wants the Kurdish forces in Manbij to retreat to the east of the Euphrates River. So the U.S. and Turkey are on opposite sides in Manbij. Turkish officials say that they will coordinate with the U.S. concerning Manbij. I can’t imagine what form that will take short of the U.S. removing the Kurdish forces.
The Bible doesn’t say anything about Manbij but Jeremiah says that Hamah and Tell Rifaat will hear evil reports then Damascus will be destroyed. The Turkish Army, the Free Syrian Army, and Al-Qaeda are amassed near Tell Rifaat and in Idlib near Hamah. My guess is that Turkey will delay attacking northwestern Syria until after their snap election in June.
Meanwhile in southern Syria, Iran is threatening to attack Israel. This may be the catalyst that brings Turkey into Damascus.
